ENGL 307 - The American Novel A study of representative works by 19th- and 20th-century American novels in their social, political and cultural contexts. The diverse readings will vary but will typically include works by authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Wells Brown, Herman Melville, Rebecca Harding Davis, Henry James, Alice Callaghan, Willa Cather, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner and James Baldwin.
