SOCI 254 - Community-Based Research


This course introduces students to the principles of community-based participatory research within the context of sociology to critically examine the role of power and positionality in the construction of knowledge and difference. Students will learn a range of community-based participatory research approaches and reflect on how to form collaborative relationships that incorporate community perspectives and interests in the research process. Students will devote time outside of class to work in partnership with local community organizations to carry out a high quality research project that meets a community need. Research projects will be identified in collaboration with the Upstate Institute based on community needs and student capacity.
