HIST 353 - History of the Modern Balkans (EU) This course examines key episodes in the history of the Balkans from the mid-19th century to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction of different peoples, cultures, and political systems, and on the meaning of Balkan history for European history. Topics include the great powers and their role in the Balkans, the reforms and revolutions of the 19th century, the wars of the 20th century, the varieties of Balkan nationalism, patterns of social and economic change, the nature of Stalinism, the Cold War, and finally, the recent conflicts in Bosnia and Kosovo.
