ANTH 337 - Globalization and Culture What does “globalization” mean, and what does it mean for societies and people facing the onslaught of global corporations? Students examine the phenomenon of globalization from a variety of theoretical perspectives, ranging from neo-liberal economics to cultural anthropology. They analyzes how each of these works defines the causes of globalization and its effects on traditional cultures, community relationships, economic wealth and justice, and political institutions. To put these theoretical works in perspective, interspersed with them are actual case studies of real people and real communities, ranging from Costa Rican farmers to Thai factory workers, interacting with the forces of globalization. These case studies allow students to test the abstract analyses and see which theories fit reality.
