SOCI 304 - Sociology of Disasters Offers an introduction to the theory and research on the sociology of disasters, with a focus on cases from Latin America and the Caribbean. Students learn how to use a sociological perspective to examine disasters as socially constructed phenomena. Students interrogate the “naturalness” of disasters by focusing on questions of vulnerability, disaster preparedness, government response and recovery, as well as questions of coloniality and power.
