ENGL 329 - Inventing Ireland An introduction to the field of Irish Studies. Begins by considering a few influential works of earlier Irish literature and then moves on to pay close attention to the Irish Revolution and the “Easter Rebellion,” particularly the explosion of creativity in the literary and dramatic arts during the Irish Literary Revival, with a special focus on the poetic work of its leader, the towering figure of W.B. Yeats, and the wide shadow his influence would cast over the work of later poets, like Nuala Ní Dhomhnail, Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon. Students are grounded in the history of Ireland, its conflicted colonial relationship with Britain, and the outsized influence of this small island on global and postcolonial literatures. May be offered as an extended study.
