ARTS 240 - Art and Theory 1960-1990 (AH) Surveys international art movements of the late 20th century that interrogated the definition of art, the status of the art object, and the role of the artist. The crisis of modernism serves as a point of departure for consideration of shifting modes of production and interpretation in art and criticism. Varied theoretical paradigms that have informed artistic practice are examined in the context of rapid and radical social change, the emergence of new media, the breakdown of conventional artistic boundaries, the impacts of decolonization and post-colonial thought, and the explosive growth of the art market and the global circulation of art.
