HIST 238 - Europe in the Age of the Renaissance and Reformation (EU)


A survey of early modern European history. It focuses on the Renaissance and the age of expansion and exploration as well as the Reformation and the era of religious wars. The primary areas of focus include the development of the European state system, the emergence of the European economy, and the growing size and scale of warfare. Additional subjects include the witch craze and gender roles, art and patronage, print culture and literacy, popular religions, and the development of the concepts of the self and individual freedom.
