HIST 339 - Traditions of European Intellectual History (EU)

This course takes as its subject the main ideas, key figures, philosophical debates, and major literary movements of Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. It explores the tensions between tradition and progress, freedom and authority, reason and the unconscious, belief and skepticism, and revolution and non-violence. This is a course about ideas - some vast, dazzling, and groundbreaking, some muddled and misguided - and the historical contexts in which they appeared. (EU)
