HIST 219 - Oceanic Histories (GL)

Given current events, it may seem self-evident that the oceans have histories, that far from being timeless, they constantly change. Nonetheless, this is a relatively recent idea. This course takes this idea as its starting point, and in doing so explores oceans and coastal areas as more than simply spaces, but as complex historical entities. The course gives particular attention to the period of increasing globalization and drastically intensifying human exploitation of the oceans since roughly the 15th century. It also considers pre-modern, pre-industrial relations between humans, oceans, and marine environments, suggesting their mutual influences long before the period usually associated with major human effects on the environment.
